IA DRANG - Battle for Vietnam (2017 April 22-23)
1965 – Southern Vietnam was under serious crisis. The Viet Cong were allowed to train and grow without significant opposition, despite losing several leaders to CIA search and destroy squads, which relied heavily on rocket attacks using helicopters. The US Army had initiated OPERATION SILVER BAYONET and OPERATION LONG REACH to sweep through dense jungle territory to clear a path for armor divisions. Using several air raids and engagements by gunships and bombing campaigns, the US Military attempted to destroy the underground tunnels and supply system set up by the Viet Cong.
The US had set up two operational sites codenamed LZ X-Ray and LZ Albany as base locations for the 1st Battalion. From here, the focus moved to group operations of search and destroy all along the Drang River Valley. Backed by the military might of Chairman Mao and the Chinese, the Viet Cong slowly gathered strength in both number and in military presence – silently awaiting to set their trap for the unsuspecting US Forces.
